a · an · the · zero article — when and why to use each one

a / an — The Indefinite Article
Use a before consonant sounds.
Use an before vowel sounds (a, e, i, o, u).

When to use a / an:
• First time you mention something
• One of many (not a specific one)
• With jobs and professions
• With singular countable nouns
DailyI saw a dog in the park. (first mention, one of many dogs)
DailyShe is an engineer. (job/profession)
DailyCan I have a glass of water?
DailyI need an umbrella — it's raining.

The rule is about the SOUND, not the letter:
an hour(silent h — starts with vowel sound "ow")
a university(sounds like "you" — consonant sound)
an honest(silent h)
a European(sounds like "you")

the — The Definite Article
Use the when both the speaker and listener know WHICH one is meant.

When to use the:
• Second mention of something (already introduced)
• Unique things (only one exists)
• Superlatives
• Ordinal numbers (first, second…)
• With rivers, oceans, mountain ranges, deserts
• With newspapers, hotels, cinemas
• Instruments ("plays the piano")
DailyI saw a dog. The dog was very friendly. (second mention)
DailyPlease close the door. (we know which door)
DailyThe sun rises in the east. (unique)
DailyShe is the best student in class. (superlative)
DailyHe swims in the Nile every morning.

Zero Article — No Article Needed
Use NO article with:
• Uncountable nouns used in general (water, music, love, information)
• Plural countable nouns used in general (dogs, people, books)
• Most proper nouns (names, cities, countries, languages)
• Sports and games
• Meals, school/work/hospital (in general meaning)
• Days, months used generally
